Far too often the powerful faculty of the imagination is taken for granted. We just presume, like our eyes, that it will do its job until something happens that interrupts its operation. It is the quiet achiever in the background of our psyche that orchestrates so much of daily living. So the more we know about its modus operandi the more able we are to utilize its tremendous power. From our earliest childhood the imagination has had an ever abiding presence in our lives. Children utilize their imagination as fantasy more than adults because their cognitive skills are still limited and not developed. Sadly today many children’s ability to imagine is stunted because electronic technology, being ever invasive of the senses, has restricted its growth and development. For this reason, and many others, I have sought to make this internal power better known. So in the subsequent chapters, I have attempted to spotlight some of its basic functions, but by no means claim to have exhausted its subject matter. In time, I am sure that others, whose imaginative powers surpass mine, will add much to these few considerations.
