Do Catholics Believe in a False Jesus?

Catholics are sometimes accused of believing in a “false Jesus” because of their belief in Purgatory. How is this the case? The argument goes that if Jesus has died for our sins and undergone all the punishment due to sin, then there should be no punishment outstanding for forgiven sin after death. If this is the case, then how can Catholics believe that temporal punishment may still be necessary for forgiven sinners after death in Purgatory? Is this because Catholics believe somehow that Jesus’ death on the Cross was inadequate or insufficient?
